Le quattro circoscrizioni cittadine occupano circa 33 chilometri quadrati di superficie,e costituiscono l’area cittadina del capoluogo,in contrapposizione a quella più rurale definita dalle restanti dieci circoscrizioni.
Asti è una città ospitale a misura d’uomo nel cui centro storico è piacevole passeggiare alla scoperta di torri,palazzi e botteghe.
Asti,come si può ben vedere dai suoi eleganti resti medioevali,visse la sua epoca d’oro intorno alla metà del XII secolo, quando grazie ai proventi derivanti dalle attività dei suoi banchieri,il libero Comune si arricchì di edifici pubblici e privati.
In quell’epoca si affermò la tradizione del Palio,si delineò il profilo ed il nucleo della città, si addensarono le caseforti e le torri delle potenti famiglie locali.
Il centro città è attraversato da Corso Vittorio Alfieri,in onore al poeta che nacque ad Asti nel 1749 e la cui casa natale si trova su questo corso al numero civico 375 .
Il cuore di Asti è rappresentato da Piazza San Secondo dove sorgono il Palazzo di Città,sede del Comune dal 1558 e la Chiesa di San Secondo,patrono di Asti.Musei di notevole interesse sono l’Archivio storico comunale,la Sinagoga con il museo ebraico,la pinacoteca (sede Palazzo mazzetti,attualmente in ristrutturazione), la Cripta di Sant’Anastasio,il complesso di San Pietro in Consavia,la Torre Troyana (per informazioni Ufficio Musei del Comune di Asti tel.0141/399460). Cuore religioso della città e splendido esempio di gotico piemontese è la cattedrale dedicata a Santa Maria Assunta,eretta tra il 1309 ed il 1354 sui resti della preesistente cattedrale.Al suo interno sono conservati splendidi affreschi e tele di Gandolfino da Roreto e di Gugliemo Caccia.

Il ricco settembre astigiano è inaugurato da Vetrina di Vino e di Sapori,vetrina della migliore tradizione enogastronomica piemontese, con momenti di animazione folcloristica ed appuntamenti culturali nelle circoscrizioni frazionali (per informazioni Ufficio Promozione del Territorio del Comune di Asti,0141/399526). La 2° domenica di Settembre si svolge il Festival delle Sagre, nato nel 1974, trionfo della tradizione enogastronomica della città e del suo territorio,a cui partecipano circa 40 pro loco della provincia (per informazioni Camera di Commercio tel.0141/535211).La festa si apre con una grande sfilata che mette in scena scorci di vita contadina, con grande attenzione alla cultura rurale del territorio astigiano. Subito dopo la piazza Campo del Palio si trasforma in un enorme ristorante,dove ogni paese propone i suoi piatti tipici.
Sempre a Settembre si svolge la Douja d’Or,Salone Nazionale dei Vini selezionati,con degustazione e vendita di centinaia di etichette di vino provenienti da tutta Italia (per informazioni Camera di Commercio tel.0141/535211).
La manifestazione più antica,con almeno sette secoli di storia e varie vicessitudini e lunghe interruzioni nel corso dei secoli, è sicuramente il Palio, che si corre ad Asti la terza domenica di settembre, trasformando la città in uno scenario medievale.Il Palio è il grande drappo di velluto con le insegne di Asti e la raffigurazione del patrono, a cui aspirano 21 pretendenti, ma per Palio si intende in realtà anche l’intera manifestazione, costituita da un imponente corteo storico con 1200 figuranti,un grandioso spettacolo di sbandieratori e la storica corsa,durante la quale i fantini montano i cavalli “a pelo”cioè senza sella.
Al primo arrivato il Capitano del Palio consegnerà appunto il drappo, mentre l’ultimo riceverà l’inchioda (acciuga) con l’insalata. Legati a questa manifestazione sono i festeggiamenti patronali del mese di maggio, che si aprono con la Stima del Palio ed il Giuramento dei Rettori,proseguono con la Festa patronale e l’offerta del Palio (1° martedì di maggio) e la grande Fiera Carolingia (1°mercoledì di maggio).Nello stesso periodo si svolge la Fiera Città di Asti (1° decade di maggio).
Durante l’anno si può assistere alla stagione teatrale internazionale “Astiteatro”(giugno/luglio) e ad Astimusica (luglio). Sempre nelle vie del centro storico, il 3° fine settimana di novembre, si svolge l’ormai tradizionale mostra – mercato Cucina & Cantina e la Fiera Regionale del Tartufo durante la quale si celebra il pregiato tartufo bianco.Ci sono poi iniziative proposte tutti i mesi dell’anno,come il mercatino agroalimentare dei prodotti tipici,che si svolge ogni quarta domenica del mese in Piazza Alfieri sotto i Portici Anfossi:per l’occasione decine di bancarelle espongono e vendono prodotti tipici del Piemonte,dai vini ai formaggi,al miele ai dolci (per informazioni Ufficio promozione del Territorio del Comune di Asti,0141/399526).Nelle vie adiacenti si svolge il Mercatino dell’Antiquariato.

The ‘Festival delle Sagre’ is held on the 2nd Sunday in September. The ‘Palio’is the great velvet drape with the arms of Asti and depicting the Patron Saint to which the 21 pretenders aspire, but the term ‘Palio’ actually also refers to the whole event, comprising an impressive historical procession with 1200 characters, a majestic show of flag wavers and the historical horse race, during which the jockeys ride their mounts “bareback”i.e.without a saddle.
The Captain of the Palio will present the drape to the first rider to arrive, while the last will receive the ‘inchioda’ (anchovy) with salad. De nombreuses fêtes patronales liées à cette manifestation se déroulent en mai:la “Stima del Palio e il Giuramento dei Rettori”(le premier samedi antécedant le premier mardi de mai), la “Festa Padronale e l’offerta Palio” (1° mardi de mai), la grande “Fiera Carolingia” (1° mercredi de mai) et dans la même période la “Fiera Città di Asti” (1° décade de mai).En été,la ville présente la saison théatrale internatio-nale “Astiteatro”(juin/juillet) et “Astimusica”(juillet). Le 3° week-end de novembre se déroulent la traditionnelle exposition-marché Cucina & Cantina et la “Fiera Regionale del Tartufo”(foire régionale de la truffe),durant laquelle se célèbre la précieuse truffe blanche.Des initiatives sont pro-posées tout au long de l’année, comme le marché agroali-mentaire des produits typiques chaque 4° dimanche du mois ayant lieu sur la place Alfieri sous les arcades Anfossi.
